A 21-year-old Texas man has been arrested in connection with the killing of a 17-year-old girl in Harris County who he was said to be dating in the Baytown area.

Tomas Bautista was arrested Sunday and is being held in the Harris County Jail on charges of murder, according to police. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning near the 7800 block of Richards Street in Baytown, about 30 miles east of downtown Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded early Sunday morning to reports of shots fired where they found the 17-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds and Bautista had allegedly already fled the scene, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene and Bautista allegedly returned to the scene and was detained by police according to Gonzalez. Investigators learned after the fact that Bautista and the teenager were in a “dating relationship.

“This tragic, senseless act of violence at one time ended a life and tore a family apart. Many teens are experiencing dating violence and it can lead to deadly consequences,” Gonzalez said. “Domestic violence at any age can turn deadly and we all need to do a better job of equipping kids to recognize early signs of abusive behavior.”

Bautista took off, but eventually came back to the scene detectives took him into custody. Bautista is currently being held on a $250,000 bond according to court records. Local KPRC 2 News spoke with the senior director of operations and communications with the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council Amy Smith who said teens should always look out for signs of domestic violence when dating.
