“She’s probably on boyfriend number eight, and I love that for her,” Ramakrishnan tells PEOPLE of her character Devi Vishwakumar, who she portrayed for four seasons on the Netflix hit

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has some theories about her Never Have I Ever character and where she’d be today.

Speaking to PEOPLE at All That Glitters Diwali Ball in New York City on Oct. 12, Ramakrishnan opened up about Never Have I Ever after the Netflix series ended in 2023. Speculating on what she thinks her leading character, Devi Vishwakumar, is up to these days, the actress had a detailed answer.

“She’s dead in a ditch,” she jokes. “She tried hardcore drugs. She went to Princeton. She finally did it. She tried hardcore drugs and…”

Quipping that “it was inevitable” for things to end that way for Devi, Ramakrishnan goes on to explain that if she had to provide an alternate — and more plausible — theory, she’d say Devi is making some changes in her life.

“If she didn’t do drugs, I would think that she’s probably hustling way too hard in university, doing way too much — kind of cringe but it’s okay,” she says. “Knowing her, her and Ben [Jaren Lewison] probably have broken up. She’s probably on boyfriend number eight, and I love that for her.”

“I hope a couple of girlfriends in there because Devi’s not straight, I don’t think really,” she adds. “She’s living her best life.”

Never Have I Ever, co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, premiered on Netflix in April 2020, following Indian American teen Devi as she navigates life in high school after the sudden death of her father. The show produced four seasons before airing its final episode on June 8, 2023.

In addition to Ramakrishnan, the series also starred Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet (who played Devi’s love interests Ben Gross and Paxton Hall-Yoshida, respectively) as well as Richa Moorjani, Poorna Jagannathan, Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Youn.

When the show’s fourth season premiered in June 2023, Ramakrishnan told PEOPLE that the end of the Netflix series felt like a death of sorts.

“Devi’s like, dead now,” she said at the time. “She’s in the realm of finished shows, just like Michael Scott [from The Office] and Eleanor and Chidi from The Good Place — they’re all dead. Devi might be dead, but this girl [Ramakrishnan] is feeling great, because I’m just so overwhelmed with gratitude.”

However, Ramakrishnan admitted it took her a while to get to that place. “I used to feel more bittersweet about it, but we’ve had some time to process, like months, and I feel really good about it right now,” she continued. “I feel very proud and just truly blessed.”

Ramakrishnan also previously told PEOPLE about what she took of Devi’s to keep her close after the series wrapped.

“I did keep some clothes,” she admitted. “I kept just a pair of blue jeans, but, like, hear me out. They’re perfectly tailored for my waist and my hips, so why wouldn’t I take them? So I took that and I often wear those. They’re my favorite pair of blue jeans. They’re nondescript blue jeans, but they fit me perfectly.”

She continued to explain that she wanted to “take something reasonable that I’m going to use often, so I took that.”
