World’s oldest dog turns 31

Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal who was recently recognised as the oldest dog in the world – and oldest dog who has ever lived – has turned 31 on Thursday 11 May.

His family celebrated the milestone with a birthday party on at his home in Conqueiros, a  village in the south of Portugal. Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa, was eight years old when Bobi was born in 1992 at the family farm. He told  that 100 guests were expected to attend the party.

According to Costa, while Bobi has been enjoying the attention he’s received since he wa there have been some concerns that the stress of frequent visitors.

“We’ve had a lot of journalists and people come from all over the world to take a picture with Bobi,” Costa said to Guinness. “There were a lot of pictures taken and he had to get up and down many times. It wasn’t easy for him.”

However, Bobi’s latest vet check-up found him in good health, although he does have some difficulty walking and his eyesight has declined. Costa attributed his dog’s longevity in part to the “calm, peaceful environment” where he lives.

The previous record holder for the oldest dog ever was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who lived to 29 years 5 months before being put to sleep in November 1939.World’s
