An Indianapolis mother is grieving the senseless loss of her daughter, who was shot and killed during an armed robbery just days before turning 19.

On Sunday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police responded to a call of a person shot in the 5900 block of Riva Ridge Drive. When they arrived they found 18-year-old Makayla Sue Bauman shot. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where she later died, IndyStar reported.

Bauman and her brother fled the complex in a car after an attempted robbery and discovered she’d been shot while driving to their home less than 2 miles away. “They didn’t know she was shot until after they got out of the apartment complex,” Bauman said. “My son was just trying to make it to where she could come home to me to help them.”

On Monday night, police announced the arrest of a 15-year-old boy in connection with her killing. He was preliminarily charged with murder.

The teen was like any other, loving to read, draw and shop with her girlfriends. The recent high school graduate loved learning, and had plans to become an anesthesiologist, her mom said.

“She always wanted to help people,” Bauman said. “That was her passion. She always had a lot of friends and teachers loved her. She had a little brother, he’s 15. They were so close, they were best friends.”
